Vietnamese President to Lam begins first official trip to Philippines
Accompanied by his wife, Ngo Phuong Ly, To Lam landed in Manila aboard a Vietnam Airlines flight and was received by Philippine Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. The visit marks the first time a leader of Vietnam’s Communist Party has traveled to the Philippines in an official capacity.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is scheduled to formally welcome the Vietnamese leader on Monday before the two sides hold discussions on a wide range of issues, including trade, investment, food security, defense collaboration, maritime affairs, tourism, education, and cultural exchanges.
Vietnam holds a unique position as the Philippines’ only strategic partner within Southeast Asia and remains an important ally in both economic and security matters.
The visit follows recent discussions between Marcos and Vietnamese Prime Minister Le Minh Hung during an ASEAN summit, where the two countries agreed to pursue a long-term framework for rice trade cooperation.
As one of the Philippines’ primary rice suppliers, Vietnam plays a significant role in supporting the country’s food supply and helping maintain price stability.
The trip also comes ahead of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations, which will be commemorated later this year.
