Guidelines in force since 6 October 2026 treat promotional content on any channel as advertising; a Bareilly agency's guide maps what doctors may post

An educational post signed with the doctor's name and registration number fits the rules. A post that reads like a sales pitch for the doctor can now cost that doctor a warning or worse.”

BAREILLY, INDIA, October 23, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Doctors in India who post on Instagram, respond to Google reviews or use AI tools for patient content now face specific national rules. Guidelines issued by the National Medical Commission (NMC) on 6 October 2026 treat promotional content on any channel as advertising, bar doctors from requesting or sharing patient reviews for promotion on social media, and prohibit AI-generated promotional campaigns. MapMyClinic, a Bareilly-based healthcare digital marketing agency, has published a free, clause-by-clause guide to what the rules allow.

The Guidelines on Ethical Advertising and Public Communication by Hospitals/Medical Institutions and Registered Medical Practitioners were issued by the NMC's Ethics and Medical Registration Board through a public notice dated 6 October 2026 (No. R-13014/01/2024-Ethics). They came into force with immediate effect and are read together with the Indian Medical Council (Professional Conduct, Etiquette and Ethics) Regulations, 2002.

State Medical Councils enforce the rules for doctors. Clause 10.1 sets graded action, from a warning and mandatory ethics training for a first violation to removal from the register for one to three years for repeated violations.

What the guidelines say on reviews, social media and AI

Google reviews and ratings: Fake, paid or misleading reviews and ratings are barred, and a doctor shall not request or share patient testimonials or reviews for professional promotion on social media (Explanation V). Manipulating search rankings or algorithms is also prohibited (clause 8.1 xii). Whether simply asking patients for an honest Google review is covered is not stated, a point the guide flags as unclear.

Social media: No channel is banned. Content on any channel counts as advertising when it is promotional (clause 3.2). Information shared without promotional intent or commercial benefit falls outside that definition (Explanation I). A doctor's electronic media posts should disclose the doctor's name, qualifications, registration status and SMR/NMR registration number, and clinics should disclose the same details for their doctors (Explanations III and IV).

AI content: AI-generated promotional campaigns for furtherance of commercial interest are prohibited. Any other AI-generated promotional content must carry a mark stating that it was made with AI (clause 7.2).

"For most clinics, the change shows up in routine tasks: how a review is requested, what a post says under the doctor's name, and whether an AI tool wrote it," said Tauseef Alam, founder of MapMyClinic. "An educational post signed with the doctor's name and registration number fits the rules. A post that reads like a sales pitch for the doctor can now cost that doctor a warning or worse. The guide puts each rule next to its clause number, so doctors and the people who run their pages can check content against the official text."

Written by Alam, the guide also covers the 2002 code, the separate codes for dentists, AYUSH practitioners and homoeopaths, and the Drugs and Magic Remedies Act, and links to the official NMC notice. It is not legal advice and recommends consulting a lawyer or the State Medical Council before a specific decision.
